Articles: Henry Tamburin on Blackjack...

Henry Tamburin, Lead Golden Touch Blackjack Instructor and well-known blackjack author, provides a number of great articles to improve your game. Read his latest article below, A Bird In the Hand. Henry also has two other new article since our last e-newsletter: Blackjack Phobia, and Blackjack Card Counting 101 - Part 2 .

A BIRD IN THE HAND

Sometimes it Pays to Discard a Winning Hand in Video Poker

By Henry Tamburin

This is a true story that happened to my father-in-law, Pete. I've written about him before and his love of video poker. At age 90 he is in fact one tough player. Quarter jacks-or-better is his game and he learned how to play correctly by practicing on video poker training software on my computer (he practices often). He also always brings a strategy card with him when he plays just in case.

Peter and my mother in law Helen visited us in Las Vegas. Knowing that he loves his jacks-or-better, I took him to a local casino that offers the highest paying jacks-or-better pay schedule (so called 9/6 jacks-or-better, where the full house pays 9 coins and the flush 6 coins per coin played). But as luck would have it, Pete wasn't doing well the first week he played. He had already endured a half dozen losing session and he wasn't happy about it. It wasn't because he wasn't playing accurately; he just wasn't getting the cards. And this short-term blip in his bankroll is normal for the game albeit it can be frustating. Then it happened.

One evening out of the blue Pete asked me about a hand that he had played earlier in the day that bothered him. He was dealt the 6, 10, jack, king and ace in clubs, meaning he was dealt a winning five-card flush that paid 30 coins. He also realized at the last second that he also had a four-card royal in the same hand, but because he had been on such a prolonged, week-long losing streak, he decided to take the sure paying flush. Keeping that tempting paying flush, however, was a mistake and he should have thrown the 6 of clubs away and drew to the four-card royal. Even though the four-card flush paid 30 coins the expected value for drawing to a four-card royal is almost 92 coins meaning holding the four-card royal is by far the more profitable play to make in the long run than holding the sure 30-coin paying flush. Pete knew better and, of course, after he reviewed his strategy card he realized what a big mistake he made. The strategy card clearly states "break a FLUSH or STRAIGHT for a four-card royal flush," so he should have discarded the 6 of clubs and draw one card. He was beside himself that he forgot such a critical play and made the wrong play. I told him to forget about, the hand is history, just learn from your mistake and never keep a paying flush (or straight) if you also have a four-card royal flush in the same hand.

Fast forward two days. I went to watch some friends play in a Blackjack Tournament and Pete came along. He quickly got antsy and wanted to play some video poker. Fortunately, I found a 9/6 jacks-or-better machine in the sports bar, so after getting him settled, I left him to play video poker while I went to watch the blackjack tournament.

A short while later I saw him out of the corner of my eye sitting next to a slot machine. I couldn't imagine why he was there and not playing video poker so I approached him to find out if there was a problem. He was all smiles when he pulled his TITO ticket out of his pocket and flashed it front of me ...it was for slightly more than a grand. I said, "Don't tell me you hit the royal?" His response was, "Yep, and you wouldn't believe what happened? " I couldn't imagine what he was referring to until he starting to explain.

It turned he was dealt ... would you believe ... the same hand he got a few days earlier except in spades. It was a 6 of spades and also the 10, jack, king and ace of spades. This time, however, he discarded the 6 and the sure paying 30 coin flush and instead held the four-card royal. He needed to draw a queen of spades, a one in 47 shot, and he nearly died when it popped up on the screen for a $1,000 royal flush.

The moral of this story is that when you play video poker a bird in the hand is not always worth more than two in the bush. You agree, Pete?

Articles: Scoblete keeps pumping out the wisdom...

Frank tells all in his latest article describing the recent World Casino's Championships in Las Vegas, put on by Golden Touch. World Casino Champions Crowned in Las Vegas.

World Casino Champions Crowned in Las Vegas!

By Frank Scoblete

August 14, 15 and 16 was a great weekend in Las Vegas for casino players interested in competing in 11 casino tournaments and taking a dozen classes given by such experts and best-selling writers as Henry Tamburin, Jerry "Stickman," Bill "Ace-10" Burton, Dominator, John "Skinny," and Billy "the Kid."

The World Casino Championships was a raging success with players coming in from Canada, Mexico, Australia as well as the United States.

The weekend was launched with a giant "Meet and Greet" party on Friday evening. I got to interview the woman who set the new World Record Craps roll of 154 number before sevening out. Pat DeMauro and her good friend John Capra (who was at the table doing the betting) gave us great information about the roll, how long it took, why it took over four hours and what kind of players were at the table and the types of bets players were making.

Since the table was so long (probably 16-feet) there were 18 players. Pat estimated that at least 10 of them were novices, including her. There were also three young women who had never played the game and were being instructed on what to do by the dealers.

Pat's roll eclipsed the Captain's former World Record roll of 147 numbers.

Pat also explained how the casino needed her permission to film her and write about her. Almost the first thing the casino did was have her sign a release form so they could get the word out to the media about this fabulous roll. Not being shy, Pat went with the publicity and now everyone knows about this great World Record roll. (You can read the full story of this remarkable roll in the July issue of Casino Player magazine.)

On Saturday and Sunday, 10 of the tournaments were held (the poker tournament was held on Friday morning) and four of those tournaments were won by women. Remember when women never played craps or table games? Here's what made this amazing: women made up less than 10 percent of the people who played in the tournaments so their success was nothing short of remarkable.

The weekend was capped off with a giant banquet in the main banquet room and an awards ceremony. What follows are the World Casino Champions:

Articles: Stickman's stance... craps from the front line!

'Stickman' is a lead GTC and GTB instructor, and a proven veteran of dice control. Jerry has three new articles in this newsletter:

The Effect of Odds For a Controlled Shooter

by Jerry "Stickman"

Recently I wrote an article comparing a pass line bet with placing the 6 or eight at various levels of dice control. The article compared three different levels of control and the resultant edge for each type of bet. The levels compared were for different SRR's.

A random shooter will throw six 7's out of every 36 rolls on average - or, simplifying, 1 out of every 6 rolls. Saying it more simply, we say a shooter has a Sevens to Rolls Rations - or SRR of 6. If a shooter is able to eliminate just under one 7 out of every 36 rolls, that shooter will have an SRR of 7. Math has shown that achieving an SRR of just 6.3 (one 7 in every 6.3 rolls) and betting only the best bets will swing the edge to the player. I used SRR's of 6.0 (Random), 6.5 and 7.0 for comparison between the Pass Lien bet and Placing a 6.

Many craps players do not know that the low house edge on the Pass Line bet comes from a two-to-one advantage on the come-out. Here is how it works. On come-out a 7 or 11 wins the pass line bet, a 2, 3, or 12 loses. Out of 36 possible combinations of the two dice there are 6 ways to throw a 7 (1-6, 2-5, 3-4, 4-3, 5-2, and 6-1) and 2 ways to throw an 11 (5-6 and 6-5) for a total of 8 ways to win the pass line bet on come-out. There is one way to throw a 2 (1-1), two ways to throw a 3 (1-2, and 2-1), and 1 way to throw a 12 (6-6) for a total of 4 ways to lose the pass-line bet. There are eight ways to win versus four ways to lose - a 2-to-1 advantage on come-out. Once a point is established, the edge swings dramatically to the house.

The results of that comparison are listed in the table below:

SRR

7.0

+1.75

+8.33

7.5

+3.38

+12.66

8.0

+5.02

+16.67

By the results above it is clear - even a slightly improved SRR favors placing the 6 and/or 8 over a pass-line bet. But what if we add odds to the pass line bet? How will that change thing?

As almost all craps players know, the odds bet carries no house edge. In a random game of craps, no house edge is the best that it gets. All other bets on the table have a built in house edge, so in a random game of craps betting a small pass line bet with maximum odds is the best way to diminish the impact of the house edge on the money bet. For example, if you bet $10 on the pass line with $50 in odds, the house will take .326 percent. If $60 is bet on the pass line, the house will take 1.414 percent - 4 1/3 times more. But, a controlled shooter has the ability to reduce the appearance of the 7, thereby reducing the 2-1 edge on come-out and increasing the odds of winning the point. If a controlled shooter has an edge greater than 1.4 percent, he actually has an edge over the house on a pass line bet without odds. Will adding the no-house-edge odds bet dilute his edge? The short answer is no. If the controlled shooter has an edge of more than 1.4 percent, he will win on the odds bet - not break even!

The table below shows the edges for pass line/come bets with different odds as well as placing the 6 or 8.

SRR

+14.03

+16.24

+17.04

+16.67

As expected the greater the SRR, the higher the player's advantage - regardless of whether the pass line is played or the 6/8 is placed.

Also, from the table we can see that if a SRR 6.5 or better shooter is taking two times odds or less, he is better off placing the 6 or 8. A shooter may only take single or double odds if that is the table maximum, or if the shooter's bankroll dictates he only has $30 to bet per hand. A $10 minimum pass line bet with double odds is $30 as is placing the 6 for $30. With these limits, a 6.5 SRR or better shooter will be better off placing the 6 or 8. If, however, he is playing on a $5 minimum table that allows 5 times odds, he is better off with a pass line bet and full odds. On a 3-4-5 times odds table, it is almost even whether he places a 6 or 8 or bets the pass line.

So there it is. If you have a verifiable SRR of 6.5 or greater you are better off betting a pass line or come bet with 5 times odds than placing the 6 or 8. If you can only go double odds or less, however, you are better off placing the 6 or 8.

I personally like the idea of playing on a 3-4-5 times odds table so I can decide whether to place the 6 or 8 or go with pass line and come bets and not suffer any decreased edge.

Until the next time........

May all your wins be swift and large and all your losses be slow and tiny.

  • how to prove, with statistical certainty, that you are influencing the dice outcomes, using our powerful and new Pro Test© method.
  • the optimal dice sets and bets given your unique dice control skill.
  • your edge over the casino: how much money you can make playing craps.

What is Smart Craps?

Like our Blackjack Audit program for blackjack, Smart Craps is a professional simulator for the game of craps. But Smart Craps is much, much more than a basic craps simulator... it is a power-house tool to help 'dice control' experts refine and improve their edge in the game of craps. For those not familiar with dice control... it is the physical skill of learning how to throw the dice in the game of craps, in such a way that the outcomes deviate significantly from random. Dice controllers attempt to master this skill sufficiently to get a positive edge in the game of craps. While this is a very controversial subject, DeepNet has had the chance to review, with statistically unbiased evaluation, many dice control experts... it can be done! Earning rates as high as 10% are possible, with very skilled shooters.

The end result is that we've developed the most powerful and sophisticated software tool to help dice control experts refine their game. It lets them test their skill using our new 'Pro Test' metric, the most accurate statistical assessment method for dice control. Dice controllers can optimize their dice sets, test different betting systems, and learn what edge (if any), they have.

Where can I learn more about Smart Craps?

How To Gamble in Tough Economic Times

By Dan Pronovost

Introduction

Dan Pronovost is the owner and president of DeepNet Technologies, makers of a wide range of advantage gambling training products and software (blackjack, poker, craps). Their web site is: www.DeepnetTech.com, and all products are available for free trial download. Dan is also the creator of the easy-to-use card counting system Speed Count, taught in the Golden Touch Blackjack course which is now available in Frank Scoblete's book and DVD, "Golden Touch Blackjack Revolution!": www.GoldenTouchBlackjack.com.

The stock market is falling, house prices are falling, the sky is falling! Lock up your wallet and don't let it get near any casinos!

Casino revenues are down, way down, anywhere from 15% to 20% from last year, depending on the location. No gambling jurisdiction is immune, not even the infamous "Land of Money," Las Vegas (14.62% downturn from January 2008 to January 2009). It's no surprise that in these tough economic times, people are gambling less.

And if you are not advantage gambling, then perhaps this is good thing to do especially if you don't have the spare entertainment income to spend in casinos. My adage has always been, "if you're going to gamble, why not gamble with a positive edge?"

But for many players, gambling is entertainment, and the complexity of advantage-play strategies like card counting in Blackjack are beyond their capabilities. So, let's pull a Suze Orman here for a moment, and take a look at typical gambling through the lens of good personal finance.

If you're going to lose...

Most gamblers play casino games in a manner that they will, in the long run, lose money to the casinos. In fact, this is how casinos make money, and even if you have no knowledge of mathematics, common sense tells you that it must be true, or the casinos would not be in business.

If you're one of the above gamblers (and if you're not sure, then that means you definitely are), then counting on Lady Luck to turn your fortunes around is a very bad idea. But that doesn't mean you can't slow down the Grande Dame of wallet stealing, if you're smart. Here are some tips on how to do this.

First, play only games where the casino has the smallest edge over the player. Novices are often surprised to learn that the casino's edge in different games can vary from a high approaching 20% to a low of only one half of a percent (excluding those few actual beatable games, like blackjack with card counting). The casino's edge, like the dangerous part of a knife, is definitely something to watch out for! For example, if the casino has a 5% edge over you in some game this means you'll lose $5 for every $100 you bet. Consider a traditional 25 cent slot machine, played with three coins (75 cents), where you're averaging 600 spins per hour. You'll be losing $22.50 an hour on average. That might not sound so bad, but suppose you win a couple lucky breaks, then graduate up to dollar slots with a 2.5% edge (traditionally, casinos have "looser" slots at higher denominations). Winning at slots is just luck: now you're handing over $45 an hour to the casino, or about $900 for a solid weekend of play for 20 hours. Can you afford that?

So, pick the games where you are better off from the start.

Blackjack with Perfect Basic Strategy

Blackjack, played with perfect strategy, generally reduces the casino's edge to 0.5% (but, never play a blackjack game where they pay 6 to 5 on a blackjack... always ask, and make sure it's the traditional 3 to 2 payoff). The number of decks and most rules (like DAS, H17/S17) don't impact the edge much for a basic strategy player. The few exceptions worth avoiding are: only allowed to double on limited hands like 10 or 11, and dealer doesn't play with a hole card (ENHC). Don't worry if the casino uses a continuous shuffle machine in play... this only matters to advantage-play card counters. But keep in mind you'll end up playing more hands per hour with a continuous shuffle machine, and therefore your hourly loss rate increases (typically 20% more).

Memorizing perfect basic strategy takes some practice (there are about 300 patterns to memorize). But you can buy software to help you learn this with a few hours of practice, or you can buy strategy cards to take with you in the casino while you play (yes... casinos generally don't mind if you refer to a printed strategy card while you play blackjack). Here are two good sources for both basic training software and strategy cards:

Blackjack training software: www.handheldblackjack.com

Now remember... even with perfect basic strategy (which means no mistakes), you're going to lose money because the casino still has the edge (albeit a small one). So avoid jumping your bets, regardless of your wins or losses (all betting schemes don't work). Play one hand only, flat bet (the same bet every time), and avoid tipping until the end of your session (and then only if you're up... I'd rather be cheap than poor).

Let's say you're flat betting in a 6-deck, DAS, S17 blackjack game, playing perfect basic strategy. The casino's edge over you is only about 0.38%. You want to go have fun for the weekend (playing 20 hours, at 100 hands/hour), flat betting $10 per hand, playing until you exhaust your bankroll, or the weekend is done. If you bring $1,100 as your bankroll, you only have about a 5% chance of busting out under these conditions. 95% of the time you'll walk away with something left, and your average loss will only be around $80. That's a pretty cheap weekend's entertainment, and you still have a 44% chance of walking away with a profit.

Something to be careful about is that this requires you to play perfect basic strategy. In reality, casinos actually realize an edge in blackjack of 5% or more. This just shows how poorly most players play, and the need to memorize perfect basic strategy or use an accurate strategy card when you play.

Another caution is if you start increasing your bets. Maybe you do it when you win, maybe when you lose: regardless of the system, it won't work. What it will do is increase your average bet size, which increases your losses. Suppose in the above game you increased your bet size to $20, but played with the same bankroll. The casino's edge over you doesn't change, and you'll only lose $160 on average over the weekend. But, your chance of busting out is now about 33%! If you're on a tight budget, play the minimum bet size you can afford.

Craps

Craps is a dynamic and fun game once you get comfortable with the somewhat daunting personality of the table game. But it can be a dangerous place for a gambler on a budget. While a few bets have a low house edge, most of the thrilling and exciting bets have a house edge of 5% or more.

Playing craps on a budget is simple: bet the pass (or don't pass) line, back those bets up with modest odds if allowed. For a little more fun and excitement, occasionally make few place bets on the 6 or 8 bets. Do not make any other bets. A common mistake in craps, especially for gamblers on a budget, is to make "opposite" bets to minimize their risk. For example, making a pass and don't pass bet on the same roll. Or betting on a pass line bet and than placing all the points other than the point number. No matter what scheme you cook up or get sold on, each bet is independent, and if they have a very bad edge, then that just makes you lose money faster.

The pass and don't pass bets in craps (without odds) have a house edge around 1.4%. The place 6 and 8 bets are 1.5%. Every other bet in craps is worse to stinking bad!

Suppose you bet the pass line for $10, and back up each come out roll with one place 6 bet for $6 (to win $7). Not surprisingly, the casino's edge is between 1.4% and 1.5%. Assume you'll make about 30 bets an hour, and play for 20 hours over a weekend. You have basically the same risk of ruin as with the previous blackjack game: with an $1100 bankroll, you'll only bust out 5% of the time. You end up losing about the same amount over the weekend on average ($68), even though the house edge is higher. This is because you'll be making less bets in an hour in craps (about 1/3 as many), compared to blackjack.

For the curious, all the above math was computed using Smart Craps, a craps simulator, dice set optimizer, and calculator from DeepNet Technologies.

Slots

If you're on a tight budget and want to play in a casino, don't play slots. Slots are designed to suck your money, and leave you broke!

First, they generally have the highest edge of all casino games (10% or more is not uncommon).

But worse still, is that slot machines are designed to get you to make as many bets as possible in the least amount of time. Making a few hundred 50 cent bets in one hour at a 10% house edge is far worse than one hundred $10 bets in blackjack with a 0.5% edge!

Suppose you play a 25 cent slot machine, with three coins (75 cents), with a generous 97% payback schedule (i.e. the house edge is 3%). For example, if you make 600 spins an hour and play slots for 20 hours over a weekend, you're going to lose $270 on average.

Note: There is a way to get the edge on a few select slot machines but the technique requires scouting and patience. The details are in the e-book Advantage Play Slot Machines by Jerry Stickman.

Video Poker

Many blackjack players have migrated to playing video poker especially when the economy is in the doldrums. Why? Cause this is when the casinos roll out their best promotions. The return on these promotions plus the return from playing select video poker games (such as 9/6 jacks-or-better, and certain high-paying Deuces Wild games) often exceeds 100%! Here's a recent example. The South Point casino located at the south end of the Strip had a promotion where they were giving slot and video poker players $50 Chevron Gas cards equal to 0.6% of their coin-in. They offer video poker games with a return of 99.5% to 99.9% (for perfect play which is not hard to do), so the gas card promo gives the smart video poker player a return of over 100%. And that doesn't even include the comps and bounce back coupons that the casino mails to players.

Summary

Even in these tough economic times, if you play smart, you can manage to enjoy a fun weekend of gambling at an average cost of $100 or so, on a session budget of about $1000 (the bankroll you bring with you to play at the casino). Stick to blackjack and basic strategy, good video poker games, and basic craps bets. You'll have fun, earn a few casino comps in the process, and at least have a couple days of not worrying over your deflated 401-K (possibly a more risky form of gambling!)

In a future issue, we'll take a look at advantage gambling in tough economic times. Specifically, we'll look at tight-budget players employing those rare strategies in games that give them the edge over the casino, like card counting in blackjack. Even here, there are things you can do to keep a tight reign on your bankroll, and maximum your return with a minimum bankroll.
