FRANK SCOBLETE'S WISDOM - WEEKLY ARTICLES BY FRANK SCOBLETE
Craps Training

Dream a Little Dream

I was walking the Atlantic City boardwalk early one morning with my good friend Bill Burton, author of the best-selling book Get the Edge at Low-Limit Texas Hold ‘Em, when Bill turned to me with this funny look in his eyes and said, "Frank, can I ask you something…private?"

"Sure, Bill, what?"

"Frank, uh, what is your deepest fantasy?"

Oh, God, I thought, don’t tell me Bill’s going to tell me he loves me. I hate to hurt his feelings by telling him what my fantasy is because it sure isn’t him.

"Uh, Bill," I said, "Why don’t you tell me your fantasy first."

"Okay. Here is my deepest fantasy, Frank, please don’t laugh at me. I, uh, well, I parlay the yo-eleven four straight times when I’m shooting and I hit it bang, bang, bang, and BANG!"

I paused. I assimilated. I rejoiced, and then I said: "That’s great! Because my fantasy is that I roll for two hours before I seven out and I make number after number, and point after point, and win a fortune and everyone is cheering me on. Sometimes I even dream that I break the all-time record roll set by Stanley Fujitake. [That roll was three hours and six minutes and occurred in 1989 at the California Club in downtown Las Vegas.]"

Then it hit him and me simultaneously – what we were actually admitting to! – and we laughed. You see, Bill and I, as men, were no longer thinking about making love to the world’s most beautiful women or conquering countries and laying waste towns and villages or whole civilizations. We weren’t thinking of distinguishing ourselves on the battlefields of athletics or on the battlefields of battle. The mundane aspects of life, love and the pursuit of happiness had boiled down to one thing – casino gambling!

Our sole and overwhelming fantasy had to do with gambling. Casino gambling was the be-all and end-all of it all. Explosive rolls. Long rolls. Big wins. We wanted to court and conquer Lady Luck; lay waste a casino bank.

Strangely enough, neither Bill nor I are daring, devil-may-care gamblers. We’re extremely conservative in our betting and rarely make a bad bet. Yet, our dreams were anything but conservative. Our dreams were big dreams, outlandishly large; dreams both of us knew would probably never be fulfilled, although who knows? In the past year, I have rolled the dice several times to the hour mark, give or take a few minutes. I might be able to break Fujitake’s record of three hours six minutes given some largesse from Lady Luck, okay a lot of largesse. Bill has, on even more occasions, hit those back-to-back yo-elevens that he sets for – going four times is not completely out of the question then for him.

And that got me to wondering about other casino players, their dream fantasies. Is it possible that the explosive growth of slot play since 1975 is a reflection of fantasy? After all, slot players do have an outside chance of winning thousands, tens of thousands, and, even, millions of dollars with the drop drop, drop of some coins and the spinning of some reels. Are slot players actually dreaming a little dream as they put their money in the machines and watch those wheels spin? I could guess, of course, and I say, "Yes, of course, they dream of the big wins – why else play those infernal machines?" But I didn’t know, for sure. And I’d like to be sure.

What are casino players’ fantasies – their deepest fantasies, as Bill says?

So, I asked some casino players to share with me their casino player dreams. Here are some of the responses:

"I start thinking about maybe winning a big jackpot the week before I go to the casinos. At night before I fall asleep I see myself at the machine. I see the reels spinning. I see the Blazing 7s hitting. I go maybe once a month. I’d love to win ten thousand or twenty thousand in one big lump. The most I have ever won was $800. But I think I will someday win my dream amount." – Anne C., slot player, Staten Island, New York.

"My fantasy is to retire from my physical therapy practice in Florida and with my family, buy a beautiful home in Las Vegas. My typical day would start with a morning trip to my favorite casino. There I'd have a nice complementary, leisurely breakfast and read the morning paper. Then I'd walk over to the craps table and have a half hour roll and win a few hundred dollars. Every time I threw the dice, I’d hit lots of numbers, hardways and points, no more quick point-7 outs. Then I would drive back home to my art studio and paint all day. No stress, just bliss. At night, we'd have wonderful dinners with our friends and maybe go to one of the lounges for drinks and entertainment When visitors would come to town, we put them up in our guest bedroom, and show them all of the sights and see some of the shows in town." – Howard N., craps player, Coral Springs, Florida

"I sometimes wish I were a big shot, a real high roller. I want to be called ‘Mr. W’ when I buy in at the game and have the hosts and pit bosses come over to say, ‘Hi, Mr. W., how are you today, sir?’ I’d like to ride around in a limo. My fantasy isn’t even that I’d win money but that I would be rich enough to go to Vegas and be treated like a high-rolling millionaire. Those are a red-chip player’s fantasies." – Dave W., blackjack player, Rahway, New Jersey

"My fantasy is to be able to roll any number I wish at craps at any time exactly the way I want to roll it. Not just any old 9, but a 4/5. I fantasize being able to roll the number the way I want to. Then once each day I would go to a different casino and on the come out roll I would hop that number one way, 4/5 for $100, roll it and collect the payout that would be $1500. I then just pick up the dice and wing them down the table till I sevened out and end each day up about $1500. Boy, what fun that would be!" – Dom L., craps player, Racine, Wisconsin

"Hitting Megabucks for twenty-five million, that’s what I dream about. I want something that will change my life forever. I’d quit my job and just play every day in the casinos. I even have figured out how I’d break up my money so that I could play every day and also live the way I want to live, in a condo not far from the Strip. I have it all figured out. I just have to hit that jackpot!" – Penelope C., slot player, St. Paul, Minnesota

"My fantasy? I want to make love to Frank Scoblete but he’s always busy playing craps!" – Halle Berry, actress, Hollywood, CA

Okay, that last fantasy isn’t real but the rest are and, like Bill’s and my fantasies, these place the fantasizer at the fulcrum of a beneficent casino universe – cash coming in, often wads of it, making for the good life, often defined as not having to work any more and just having fun, playing the games, just like a kid.

Casino gambling is the dream factory, a title once reserved for Hollywood. But Hollywood’s dreams happened to those other people up there in the screen. It was all-pretend. In casino gambling, some dreams do actually come true. With that in mind, I say if you’re going to dream a little dream, why not make it a big one? Mr. Fujitake, I’m coming!
